The first thing that struck me as I descended the aircraft steps  was the smell of the sea, with a hint of jet fuel.

The flight from Seoul was certainly made bearable with an upgrade to business class. The downside was that the meal took twice as long as each course was served. Having left Seoul at 11pm, sleep was the priority. I have never been one for sleeping on planes but Turkish Airlines business class sleep seat made it easier to catch a few winks.

The central city displays its classical European pedigree. Large apartment blocks laced with tree lined boulevards. Between these monoliths you occasionally glimpse the playfulness of Gaudi.
